Pedagogical Guide
Objective & Principle of the Activity
The pedagogical objective is to consolidate and expand students' lexicon on the themes of **nature** and the **environment** by working on synonyms for specific adjectives.
The activity consists of a synonym matching exercise. Students are asked to connect pairs of adjectives with very similar meanings. The vocabulary covers notions related to geography, climate, and the characteristics of the natural world. The activity enables students to vary their vocabulary to describe natural phenomena, places, or environmental issues.
Suggested Lesson Flow
Before the Activity (~5 min): BRAINSTORMING
-
Write a keyword (e.g., "**ENVIRONMENT**") on the board and ask students to list all the adjectives they know related to this theme. This helps activate their prior knowledge.
During the Activity (~5-10 min): CONNECTING IDEAS
-
Distribute the activity sheet. Students, alone or in pairs, connect the synonym pairs.
-
Lead a group correction, ensuring correct pronunciation of the terms. For each pair, ask for an example sentence to contextualize the vocabulary.
After the Activity (~10 min): CONCRETE APPLICATION
-
Project an image of a landscape (a forest, a desert, a pole) or a world map.
-
Ask students to describe what they see orally or in a few lines, making sure to use at least three of the new adjectives learned during the activity.
Adaptations
-
To Simplify: Complete the first two matches as a whole class to guide students. Allow the use of a dictionary for the most difficult terms.
-
To Extend: Ask students to write a short **weather report** for a region of the world using as many of the studied adjectives as possible. They can also be asked to find the **antonyms** for each pair.
