Objective & Activity Overview

The pedagogical objective is to reinforce the recognition and spelling accuracy of A1 level vocabulary related to places (public, private, and travel-related). The resource is a six-term word scramble exercise. Each scrambled word (e.g., TRIPORTA, RARBILLY, YITC) is associated with a descriptive clue that defines its function or context (e.g., "A place with planes", "A place to read books", "A place with many houses"). Students must unscramble the letters to reconstruct the correct words: **ROOM**, **AIRPORT**, **SHOP**, **LIBRARY**, **CITY**, and **ROAD**. The exercise covers various environments, from home to travel.

Suggested Procedure

Before the activity (~5 min): CLASSIFYING PLACES

  • Write the categories on the board: *Home*, *City*, *Travel*. Ask students to list one or two places they know in English under each category to activate their lexicon.

  • Highlight spelling difficulties such as **RARBILLY** (LIBRARY) and **TRIPORTA** (AIRPORT) to encourage their attention.

During the activity (~15-20 min): UNSCRAMBLING PLACES

  • Step 1: Timed individual work. Students use the clue to find the word and the scrambled letters to check the spelling.

  • Step 2: Ask students to first focus on the short words (ROOM, SHOP, CITY, ROAD) to gain fluidity, then tackle the long words (AIRPORT, LIBRARY).

  • Step 3: Collective correction. For each word, ask "Where do you go to..." and the student answers with the decoded word, reinforcing the link between the place and its function.

After the activity (~5-10 min): LOCATION AND PREPOSITIONS

  • **Sentence Production:** Ask students to write two (A1) sentences describing where they like to go, using the discovered words and prepositions of place (*in, at, to*) (Ex: "I like to go to the **LIBRARY**." "I live in a **CITY**.").

  • **Mental Mapping:** Ask students to draw a very simple map of their neighborhood or home and label at least three places from the list.

Adaptations

  • To simplify: Divide the words into two groups (short and long) and provide the answers for the short words in advance to reduce cognitive load.

  • To extend: Introduce associated adjectives (Ex: *busy* **CITY**, *long* **ROAD**, *quiet* **LIBRARY**). Ask students to create new clues for A2 places like *museum* or *post office*.
