Objective & Resource Content

The objective is to enable beginner students to ask and give simple answers about the date, the weather, and their emotions, within the framework of a class-opening ritual.

The document is a poster titled "**TODAY**", structured around three essential questions.

  • For **"What day is it today?"**, it provides the days of the week (MONDAY, TUESDAY...), ordinal numbers (FIRST, SECOND...) and the months of the year (JANUARY, FEBRUARY...).
  • For **"What's the weather like today?"**, it offers a choice of illustrated weather adjectives, such as SUNNY, RAINY, and WINDY.
  • For **"How do you feel today?"**, it lists common emotions with emoticons, such as HAPPY, SAD, and TIRED.

Each question is accompanied by a response model ("It's...", "I feel...").

 


Suggested Lesson Flow

Setup (one time only): THE CLASS CALENDAR

  • Create a large interactive wall calendar with movable elements for the day, date, month, and a section for a weather icon.

During the Activity (daily ritual, ~5-10 min): THE DAILY REPORT

  • Project the "**TODAY**" poster. Ask the first question: "What day is it today?". Guide a student to construct the answer using the vocabulary from the poster, then update the wall calendar.

  • Ask the second question: "What's the weather like today?". A student looks out the window and chooses the correct word from the poster. Add the corresponding weather icon to the calendar.

  • Ask the third question: "How do you feel today?". Do a quick round of the class where each student answers with "I feel..." choosing an adjective.

After the Activity (weekly consolidation): MY JOURNAL

  • At the end of the week, students can write a very simple journal entry for one day, using the information from the ritual: "Today is Monday, the fifth of October. It is sunny. I feel happy.".


Adaptations

  • To Simplify: Focus on only one question per week to start. Use flashcards for each word and ask students to physically choose the correct card for the day.

  • To Extend: Ask follow-up questions with "**Why?**". For example: "You feel tired. Why?", "It's rainy today. Do you like rainy days?". This encourages more spontaneous speaking.
