Conteúdo ExclusivoAnchor A1 level colour vocabulary with "Odd One Out - Colours". This lexical classification exercise is a powerful tool to quickly consolidate the recognition and memorisation of colour adjectives (red, blue, yellow...). By asking students to identify the odd one out (a feeling or a size) among the colours, the resource develops their analytical skills and strengthens their ability to categorise words according to their function and semantic field. Objective & Plot Summary
The main pedagogical objective is to reinforce the recognition and memorization of A1 level vocabulary related to colours (red, blue, yellow, silver, etc.) by developing the ability to categorize and identify an odd adjective that does not belong to this semantic field. The resource is an "Odd One Out" exercise consisting of seven lines. In each line, three or four words are colours, while the odd one out is a basic A1 adjective denoting a feeling (e.g.: happy, sad) or a dimension (e.g.: big, long, tall). The student must circle the adjective that is not a colour.
Suggested Procedure
Before the activity (~5 min): RECALLING COLOURS AND THE ODD ONE OUT
-
Getting started: The teacher distributes the worksheet. Write 'Colours' on the board. Ask students to name classroom objects using a basic colour (e.g.: « The board is **white** ») to reactivate the vocabulary.
-
Introducing the task: Remind students of the 'Odd One Out' rule. Emphasise that this time, all words are adjectives, but only one is not a colour.
During the activity (~15 min): COMPARING ADJECTIVES
-
Step 1: Individual completion (8 min). Students read and circle the odd one out. Emphasise that the correct answer relies on the semantic nature of the word (what it describes).
-
Step 2: Peer check and justification (7 min). In pairs, students compare their answers and prepare the justification: « Happy is the odd one out because **red, blue, and green** are **colours** » or « Big is the odd one out because it is about **size** ».
After the activity (~10 min): CREATE YOUR OWN DESCRIPTION
-
Whole-class correction: Conduct oral correction, using the pairs' justifications. Categorise the odd adjectives on the board (Feelings, Size).
-
Oral production: Ask students to choose a classroom object and describe it using a colour from the list and, if possible, an odd adjective (e.g.: « The ruler is **yellow** and **long** » or « My pencil case is **black** and **big** »).
Adaptations
-
To simplify: First, propose a phase where students classify all the words from the worksheet into three columns on the board (Colours, Feelings, Size) to identify the categories before looking for them line by line.
-
To extend: Introduce the concept of adjective agreement and position in simple sentences (It is a **big red** ball) using the Adjective-Colour pairs found in the worksheet.
