Objective & Activity Overview

The pedagogical objective is to master the spelling and recognition of main colors, as well as common vocabulary terms (clothes and food) at A1 level. The resource consists of a table offering six scrambled word challenges. Each scrambled word (e.g., LOWYEL, THIRS) is associated with a descriptive hint that contextualizes it (e.g., "The color of a banana", "A piece of clothing for your top half"). Students must decode the letters to find the exact word (YELLOW, SHIRT, GREEN, BLACK, ORANGE, CARROT). The exercise places particular emphasis on clarifying colors and their application to real objects.

Suggested Procedure

Before the activity (~5 min): THE OBJECT AND ITS COLOR

  • Conduct a *choral repetition* exercise for the colors on the list (GREEN, YELLOW, BLACK, ORANGE) to reinforce pronunciation. Ask students to quickly name objects in the classroom that are these colors.

  • Explain that the hints allow them to "see" the word even before deciphering the letters. Emphasize the word "TRORCA" (CARROT) which is an exception in the list of colors.

During the activity (~10-15 min): TARGETED DECODING

  • Step 1: Individual work. Students complete the "Answer" column first, based solely on the "Hint". This forces lexical retrieval before spelling correction.

  • Step 2: They then check if the word found is indeed composed of the same letters as the "Scrambled Word". Words like 'YELLOW' and 'CARROT' may require manipulation of letters on scratch paper.

  • Step 3: Collective correction using a board. Ask students to point to the corresponding object or color in the classroom when the word is revealed.

After the activity (~5-10 min): FROM COLOR TO DESCRIPTION

  • **The Color Parade:** Use the words **SHIRT** and **CARROT**. Ask students to write and pronounce a sentence describing the color of a piece of clothing they are wearing or a vegetable (Ex: "My SHIRT is GREEN," "A CARROT is ORANGE.").

  • **Reverse Word Scramble:** Ask students, in pairs, to choose one of the words (ex: BLACK) and scramble it themselves (ex: KACBL). The partner must decode it again.

Adaptations

  • To simplify: Provide a word bank (GREEN, YELLOW, BLACK, etc.) on the board that students can cross off as they find the answers.

  • To extend: Introduce new colors (PURPLE, BROWN) and new clothing items (DRESS, SOCKS). Ask students to write new descriptive hints following the exercise model.
