Objective & Resource Content

The objective is to strengthen and expand knowledge of **high-frequency adjectives** by identifying their direct synonyms, in order to allow students to vary their vocabulary.

The document is a synonym matching exercise focused on general adjectives (**"General Adjectives - 1"**). Students must connect eight pairs of words with similar meanings. The vocabulary includes fundamental pairs such as *bad/awful*, *good/fine*, *quick/fast*, *difficult/hard*, *correct/right*, *wrong/false*, *simple/easy*, and *strange/unusual*. This activity ensures that students not only master the meaning of these essential words but can also use alternatives to avoid repetition.

Suggested Lesson Flow

Before the Activity (~5 min): OPPOSITES GAME

  • Write a few adjectives from the list on the board (e.g., *good*, *fast*, *wrong*, *simple*) and ask students to find their **antonyms** (opposites). This allows them to activate the vocabulary in an indirect way.

During the Activity (~5-10 min): FIND THE PAIRS

  • Distribute the sheet. Students, individually or in pairs, connect the synonym pairs.

  • Lead a group correction. Take the opportunity to discuss the **nuances of intensity** (e.g., *awful* is often stronger than *bad*).

After the Activity (~10 min): REPHRASING EXERCISE

  • Give students simple sentences containing an adjective from the first column (e.g., "This exercise is *simple*.", "Your answer is *correct*.").

  • Ask them to **rephrase** each sentence using the corresponding synonym from the second column ("This exercise is *easy*.", "Your answer is *right*.").

Adaptations

  • To Simplify: Complete the first two or three pairs as a whole group. For polysemic words like *right*, guide students toward the meaning of "**correct**."

  • To Extend: Challenge students to use at least five of the adjectives (one from each pair if possible) to write a short paragraph describing their day or a movie they watched.
