The objective is to strengthen and expand knowledge of a second set of **high-frequency adjectives** by identifying their synonyms, in order to allow students to produce richer and more varied speech.

The document is a synonym matching exercise focused on general adjectives ("**General Adjectives - 2**"). Students must connect eight pairs of words with similar meanings. The vocabulary includes fundamental pairs such as *modern/new*, *old/ancient*, *powerful/strong*, *common/usual*, *certain/sure*, *famous/popular*, *intelligent/smart*, and *stupid/silly*. This activity enables students to better understand the nuances between words they already know and to acquire new alternatives for their written and oral production.

Suggested Lesson Flow

Before the Activity (~5 min): WORDS AND CONCEPTS

  • Write concepts on the board (e.g., "a castle," "a smartphone," "a famous singer") and ask students to give adjectives to describe them. This helps activate relevant vocabulary.

During the Activity (~5-10 min): MAKING THE RIGHT CONNECTIONS

  • Distribute the sheet. Students, individually or in pairs, connect the synonym pairs.

  • Lead a group correction. Take the opportunity to discuss the **nuances of meaning** (e.g., *ancient* is much stronger than *old*; *silly* is often less derogatory than *stupid*).

After the Activity (~10 min): IMPROVED DESCRIPTION

  • Ask students to choose a famous person or a place they like. They must write 2-3 sentences to describe it using at least two synonym pairs from the sheet (e.g., "The Eiffel Tower is very *old*, it's an *ancient* monument. It is very *famous* and *popular* with tourists.").

Adaptations

  • To Simplify: Complete the first two or three pairs as a whole group. Give fill-in-the-blank sentences to help students deduce the meaning of the words.

  • To Extend: Challenge students to find the **antonym** (the opposite) of each pair of adjectives. They can also use the words to compare two objects (e.g., "Compare an *old* car and a *modern* car.").
