Resource Objective & Content

The objective is to introduce and consolidate the basic vocabulary for describing people and social relationships for A2-level students.

The document is a synonym matching exercise on the theme "Adjectives of Relationships". Students must connect eight pairs of adjectives with similar meanings. The vocabulary covers notions such as friendship (friendly/kind, close/near), isolation (lonely/alone), character (rude/impolite, independent/free), and social life (social/public, familiar/common, related/connected). This activity allows students to acquire useful words for talking about their friends and the people around them.

Suggested Procedure

Before the Activity (~5 min): WHAT IS A FRIEND?

  • Ask simple questions to the class like "What is a good friend?". Write the adjectives suggested by the students on the board (e.g.: "A friend is nice").

During the Activity (~5-10 min): MATCHING GAME

  • Hand out the sheet. Complete the first pair as a large group to ensure the instructions are understood.

  • Allow students, individually or in pairs, to connect the remaining pairs.

  • Lead a collective correction using images or emoticons to illustrate the words (a smiley face for friendly, a person alone for lonely).

After the Activity (~10 min): WHO AM I?

  • The teacher describes a simple person or situation using 2 or 3 adjectives from the sheet. Students must guess what or who it is. For example: "I am new at school. I don't know anybody. I feel..." (lonely / alone).

Adaptations

  • To simplify: Mime the adjectives (wave your hand for friendly, cross your arms and look angry for rude). Do the entire activity as a large, guided group.

  • To extend: Ask students to write two simple sentences to describe their best friend using at least two different adjectives from the sheet.
