Objective & content
This A1- documentary tells how Stephanie Kwolek, a chemist at DuPont, was looking for a light material for car tires when she made a thin, cloudy liquid that looked like a mistake. Her colleague Charles Smullen did not want to test it, but she asked him to try, and the fibre turned out to be incredibly strong. The episode ends with the uses of Kevlar, from bulletproof vests to helmets and spaceships. The main language point is the past simple, regular and irregular verbs, with a short comparison (five times stronger than steel) and the vocabulary of jobs and past inventions. Learners practise listening comprehension and vocabulary building; as the script says, "Stephanie was curious."
Materials & prerequisites
The episode folder holds a printable (`printable.md`) and a student sheet and a teacher sheet, each as PDF and HTML. Learners should already know the present simple and be ready to meet common past forms in context.
