O jednostce

I have a bike and I've got a bike are both correct. Cody says have, Freya says have got. Learn both, and the one mix that is always wrong.

Przewodnik dydaktyczny

Objective & content

This Grammar Fix video (about 3 minutes) is different: nobody is wrong at first. Cody says I have a bike, Freya says I've got a bike. The meaning is the same. The rule: pick one style and stay in it. Then the hosts fix the one real mistake, which mixes got with do. Correct questions: Have you got a pen? or Do you have a pen? Correct negatives: I haven't got a pen or I don't have a pen. Students repeat the questions, then play a three-round game.

Pedagogical guide

Americans almost always say have. British speakers, especially when they talk, often add got (I've got, she's got, they've got). Both are standard English. Have is the safe default everywhere. Have got is the more casual British style. The unit suits every class. The only real error is the mixed form: got never takes do, in either accent. Say the mixed form once, then correct it. Never correct a student who says have got.

Suggested procedure

  1. Before (2 min). Write I have a bike and I've got a bike on the board. Ask which one is correct. Then say both are.
  2. Watch (3 min). Play the video once. Students repeat aloud when Cody says "Say them with me": Have you got a pen? Do you have a pen?
  3. Game (3 min). Play the game again. Both sentences are shown and said. In rounds one and two, both are correct: students listen for the style that sounds like Freya or like Cody. Round three has one right answer. Pause at each thinking beat ("Have a think...") and ask the class to vote.
  4. After (4 min). In pairs, students ask each other three questions about things they own, all in one style.

Materials & prerequisites

  • The video, a screen and sound for the whole class.
  • The example sentences are at about A2 level. Students need have for possession and basic question forms.

Assessment & extensions

Students write three questions about a partner's things in one style. They swap and check that no question mixes do with got.

Możliwe adaptacje

  • Poziomy zaawansowane: zachęć do ustnego streszczenia i debaty po angielsku na ten temat.
  • Liczne klasy: zorganizuj pracę w grupach ze zróżnicowanymi rolami.
