Objective & content

This A1+ documentary is a dialogue between two speakers about the British monarchy. They explain that Britain is a constitutional monarchy: the King is head of state, but Parliament makes the laws and the government writes the speech he reads when he opens Parliament. They talk about the last time a king or queen said no to a new law (1708), why the King stays neutral and does not vote, and who is who in the royal family, from Queen Elizabeth the Second to the next two in line to the throne. The grammar focus is the present simple, with questions and negatives (can he say no, he doesn't vote). The vocabulary covers government and the royal family. Learners listen to the audio and answer the in-app questions. One line to notice: "He has to stay neutral."

Materials & prerequisites

The folder holds the audio, the subtitles and the script, and two printable sheets (PDF): a student sheet for each learner and a teacher sheet with the answer key. Learners should know the present simple, the numbers and the family words (mother, son, wife, sister).
