Objective & content
This documentary profiles Rudyard Kipling, author of The Jungle Book, with Mowgli, Baloo and Shere Khan. It follows his life from his birth in Bombay in 1865, through his school years in England and his work as a journalist in India, to his Nobel Prize in 1907. Learners listen to a short biographical narrative and meet the past simple (was born, lived, wrote) alongside the present simple. Vocabulary covers famous people, wild animals and countries. The script says plainly that Kipling supported the British Empire and that people judge this differently today. One line to listen for: "The boy left India at six. But India never left him."
