Teaching guide

Objective & content

A four-task vocabulary sheet on places in the city. Pupils unscramble eight names (SHOCOL for school, CMENAI for cinema), name three more places of their own, match five descriptions to Hospital, Hotel, Pharmacy, Supermarket and Cinema, and read three clues to write restaurant, post office and library.

Pedagogical guide

The tasks move from spelling to meaning: unscrambling checks the written form, the open task asks for recall with no prompt, and the last two need full-sentence reading. The last task has no box, so pupils must produce the word. The descriptions are long for this level, so be ready to explain unwell and temporary.

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Brainstorm places in town orally; write nothing on the board.
  2. (8 min) Pupils unscramble the eight names, then add three places of their own.
  3. (10 min) Pupils match the five descriptions, then write the three answers to the clues.
  4. (6 min) Check with the key; collect the pupils' own places on the board, since answers vary.
  5. (3 min) Spell two words aloud together.

Adaptations

[S] Give the first letter of each scrambled word and explain unwell and temporary beforehand.

[A] Pupils write a one-line clue of their own for each of their three added places.

Materials & prerequisites

One copy of page 1 per pupil and a pencil; page 2 is your answer key. Pupils should already know police station, fire station, pharmacy and post office.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
