Teaching guide

Objective & content

By the end, A2 students can discuss animals and pets aloud with an opinion or a comparison. This speaking deck gives 24 "Animals & pets" chat prompts using comparatives, superlatives, past simple and reasons, each with a sentence-frame scaffold. It plays on screen (draw and shuffle) or prints as a single A4 sheet of cut-out cards.

Pedagogical guide

Use this A2 deck once comparatives, superlatives and past simple are familiar — animals give students a concrete, motivating topic for comparing ("A ___ is better because ___") and recalling ("Yes, I had a ___."). The frame scaffolds the target structure each card is built around; encourage students to extend past it once confident.

Suggested procedure

  1. (2 min) Form groups of 3–4 and shuffle or display the deck.
  2. (1 min) Model one card: read the question, answer using the frame plus a reason.
  3. (8–10 min) Students take turns drawing a card and answering aloud, always giving a reason; the teacher circulates and asks a follow-up where useful.
  4. (2 min) Whole-class share-out: 2–3 students repeat their favourite answer and reason.

Adaptations

  • [S] Complete the frame with one reason only; skip cards needing past simple if not yet secure.
  • [A] Add a second reason, or ask the speaker a follow-up question themselves.

Materials & prerequisites

Plays on screen (draw/shuffle) or prints as a single A4 sheet of cut-out cards. Assumes comparatives, superlatives, past simple, and animal/pet vocabulary.

Curriculum alignment

Maps to Cycle 3 "child and close environment" (FR 6e) — pets and animals, extended to opinions and comparisons.

Assessment & extensions

Listen for correct comparative/superlative forms as an informal speaking check. Extend into a short "best pet" persuasive paragraph, or pair with the A1 Animals & Pets deck for mixed-level classes.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
