The team plays or the team play? British English says both, American English prefers one. Learn the two styles and how to stay consistent.
Teaching guide
Objective & content
This Grammar Fix video (about 3 minutes 30) is about group words such as team, family and class. Americans use a singular verb (The team plays). British speakers often use a plural verb (The team play). Freya (British) and Cody (American) say both are correct. The one real mistake is mixing the two in one sentence. The rule: pick singular or plural and keep it, including the pronoun (The team plays, and it wins). Students repeat both styles with the hosts, then play a three-round game.
Pedagogical guide
This is not a first-language problem. It is a real difference between British and American English, so every class meets it. Say plainly that neither accent is wrong. Singular is the safe default everywhere. The same choice covers government, staff and audience.
Watch for students who hear "both are fine" and relax too far. They mix a singular verb with they. That is wrong in both accents. The video quotes it once. Correct it, do not drill it.
Suggested procedure
- Before (2 min). Write The team plays well and The team play well on the board. Ask which is correct.
- Watch (4 min). Play the video once. Students repeat aloud when the hosts say "Say them with me": The team plays, and it wins. The team play, and they win.
- Game (3 min). Play the game again. In rounds one and two both options are correct; students match the style to Freya or Cody. Round three is a real right or wrong. Pause at each thinking beat ("Have a think", "Hmm... let's see", "Which is it") and ask the class to vote.
- After (3 min). Both board sentences are correct. In pairs, students add a second part to each sentence with the right pronoun.
Materials & prerequisites
- The video, a screen and sound for the whole class.
- The examples are at about B1- level. Students need the present simple and the pronouns it and they.
Assessment & extensions
Give a short paragraph about a band with the verbs and pronouns blank. Students complete it twice, all singular and all plural, and check that each version stays consistent.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
