Teaching guide

Objective & content

This sheet teaches 28 school words: objects such as ruler, rubber and pencil case, places such as playground and canteen, school subjects, and words like timetable, uniform and homework. Pupils name the objects and places from pictures, then read Zoe's text about her school in Manchester and answer six multiple-choice questions. They match each subject with what you do in the lesson and complete ten sentences. The last task, the hardest, is Zoe's message to Tom, a new pupil, where each gap is a choice between three school words.

Pedagogical guide

The words move from recognising to using: pictures first, then the words in Zoe's text, then new sentences, then a full message where every option is a school word. Each task tests words only, never grammar, and every item has one answer. The grammar stays on the 6ème floor: the present simple of be, have, like and play, and there are. Pencil case, rubber, ruler, scissors, playground, timetable, uniform, maths and canteen are above A1 in our word lists, taught here because they name the topic. Zoe's uniform and timetable show a school day in England.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Hold up objects from a school bag; the class names the ones they know.
  2. (10 min) Activities 1 and 2: pupils write the word under each picture. Some words in the box have no picture.
  3. (10 min) Activities 3 and 4: read Zoe's text aloud, then pupils tick the right answers.
  4. (5 min) Activity 5: pupils match the subjects with what you do in the lesson.
  5. (10 min) Activities 6 and 7: the sentences, then Zoe's message to Tom.
  6. (5 min) Check with the answer key on page 4.

Adaptations

[S] Do activities 1 and 2 with real objects from the pupils' bags.

[A] Pupils write three sentences about their own school with words from page 1.

Materials & prerequisites

One copy per pupil, three pupil pages. Page 4 is the answer key: keep it. To take it further, pupils draw and label a plan of their school, or present their timetable to a partner ("On Monday I have...").

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
