Le moyen mnémotechnique : UK theatre / US theater (orthographe)
Orthographe : theatre (UK, -re final) vs theater (US, -er final). En US, movie theater = cinéma. Aux US, dire « let's go to the theater » est ambigu (théâtre OU cinéma).

Au Royaume-Uni, operating theatre = bloc opératoire (à l'hôpital). Aux États-Unis, on dit operating room. Faux-ami médical à connaître.
Home theater / home theatre = home cinéma
Aux États-Unis : home theater. Au Royaume-Uni : home cinema. Désigne un système audio-vidéo domestique pour regarder des films.
Les erreurs à ne plus faire
I went to the theater last night. (US, ambigu)
Aux États-Unis, cette phrase peut signifier « j'ai été au théâtre » OU « j'ai été au cinéma ». Pour préciser : movie theater = cinéma, theater seul = souvent théâtre dans un contexte de pièce.
Let's go to the theater to see Spider-Man. (UK) ❌
Au UK, pour voir un film il faut dire Let's go to the cinema to see Spider-Man.. Theatre au UK = théâtre uniquement (pièces de théâtre).

Quelle différence entre theatre et theater ?+
C'est une différence orthographique : theatre (UK) vs theater (US). Aux US, theater peut aussi désigner un cinéma (movie theater). Au UK, theatre = théâtre uniquement, cinema = cinéma.
