Teaching guide

Objective & content

This A1- documentary gives a picture of everyday life in modern Australia, told by a single narrator. It explains that the capital is Canberra, not Sydney, and that Australia is nicknamed "Down Under". It then covers the two World Wars and the ANZACs, immigration and the word "Aussies", beach life, surfing, the "barbie", Australian Rules Football, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, and the Outback. The language focus is the present simple and "be" for description, with basic adjectives. Vocabulary covers countries, sports and towns. The main skill is listening comprehension, followed by the in-app quiz. The script defines a key word: "A barbecue is a meal you cook and eat outside."

Materials & prerequisites

  • Student sheet and teacher sheet (PDF and HTML versions in `printables/`), plus the sheet source `printable.md`.
  • Learners should know the verb "be", simple present statements and basic adjectives. Years and numbers are useful.
