Teaching guide

Objective & content

By the end, A2 students can describe their day aloud, referring to habits, past events and plans. This speaking deck gives 24 "My day" chat prompts mixing present simple, past simple, have to and going to, each with a sentence-frame scaffold. It plays on screen (draw and shuffle) or prints as a single A4 sheet of cut-out cards.

Pedagogical guide

Use this A2 deck once past simple and going to are familiar — daily routine is a natural bridge between the three time frames, letting students narrate what they usually do, what they did yesterday, and what they will do tonight. The frame scaffolds each card's target structure; encourage students to extend past it once confident.

Suggested procedure

  1. (2 min) Form groups of 3–4 and shuffle or display the deck.
  2. (1 min) Model one card: read the question, answer using the frame plus a reason.
  3. (8–10 min) Students take turns drawing a card and answering aloud, always giving a reason; the teacher circulates and asks a follow-up where useful.
  4. (2 min) Whole-class share-out: 2–3 students repeat their favourite answer and reason.

Adaptations

  • [S] Complete the frame with one reason only; keep to present-simple cards, skip past-simple ones if not yet secure.
  • [A] Add a second reason, or ask the speaker a follow-up question themselves.

Materials & prerequisites

Plays on screen (draw/shuffle) or prints as a single A4 sheet of cut-out cards. Assumes present simple, past simple, have to, going to, and daily-routine vocabulary.

Curriculum alignment

Maps to Cycle 3 "child and close environment" (FR 6e) — the child's daily routine across past, present and future.

Assessment & extensions

Listen for correct tense choice as an informal speaking check. Extend into a written "yesterday vs today" comparison paragraph, or pair with the A1 My Day deck for mixed-level classes.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
