Teaching guide

Objective & content

This grammar sheet teaches questions and negatives in the present simple with do and does: don't and doesn't, short answers (Yes, she does. No, I don't.) and questions with What, Where, When and What time. Pupils read Josh's interview with Zara, a young swimmer, for the school magazine, find the missing words and complete the rule themselves. By the end, they can ask and answer questions about someone's day and say what people don't do.

Pedagogical guide

Page 1 is the interview, with a picture of Josh and of Zara: she gets up at quarter past five, swims before school, and her brother doesn't like water. Pupils find nine missing words in sentences from the interview. Page 2 has a rule of five gaps with a word box (it includes "no -s after does and doesn't"), eleven sentences where the subject decides between Do and Does or don't and doesn't, and nine false sentences about Zara to make negative, so that each one becomes true. Page 3 has six questions about Zara to answer with short answers and three question words to choose. The last task is an interview game: pupils read eight answers (A to H), put the words in order to make the questions, write the letter of each answer, then ask a partner four of the questions and write the answers. Every exercise opens with a worked example. The sheet uses only the present simple.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Ask a few pupils "Do you like sport? What time do you get up?" and write the questions on the board.
  2. (10 min) Read the interview aloud; pupils find the missing words.
  3. (5 min) Pupils complete the rule alone, then check it together.
  4. (10 min) Page 2: pupils tick the right words, then make the sentences about Zara negative.
  5. (5 min) Page 3: short answers about Zara, then the question words.
  6. (10 min) Interview game: pupils make the questions and find the answers, then interview a partner.
  7. (5 min) Check with the answer key on pages 4 and 5.

Adaptations

[S] Pupils read the interview aloud in pairs, one as Josh and one as Zara, before the tasks.

[A] Pupils write three more questions for Zara.

Materials & prerequisites

One copy of pages 1 to 3 per pupil. Pages 4 and 5 are the answer key and teacher notes: keep them. Pupils need the present simple with I and with he or she (the -s), the time, and the words for the day, food and sports. To take it further, pupils interview a classmate about a sport or a hobby for a class magazine.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
