Teaching guide

Objective & content

A two-page printable that goes with the Now You Say It episode Do You Have Any Brothers or Sisters?: Mila at home with Andre, her big brother, and Zoe, her little sister. Pupils name seven things in the room, answer how many brothers and sisters they have themselves, then colour the picture, with the teacher key on page two.

Pedagogical guide

Every word is A1 in the glossary and every one is a thing the picture shows, so a true beginner meets it with the object in front of them. Naming Mila's own family first, before the personal question, gives pupils a model answer to copy before they have to build their own.

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Point at Andre and Zoe in the picture and ask "Who is it?"; the class answers together.
  2. (10 min) Hand out page 1. Pupils write the word for each numbered thing from the list.
  3. (5 min) Pupils answer the last line: how many brothers and sisters do they have?
  4. (5 min) Correct from page 2.
  5. (10 min) Colouring.

Adaptations

[S] Read the word list aloud and let pupils match number to word.

[A] Fold the word list away and let pupils write from memory, then check with a partner.

Materials & prerequisites

Page 1 printed for every pupil, plus coloured pencils. Keep page 2, the teacher key. Black and white printing is enough and is what the sheet is designed for.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
