Teaching guide

Objective & content

This sheet on music starts from a conversation between two friends: Freya plays the violin in her town's youth orchestra, and Leon is the drummer in a band that writes its own songs. They talk about rehearsing, lyrics, their first gig and a music festival in July. No real band or song is named. Pupils learn to talk about the music they play and listen to. They answer six multiple-choice questions, write six instruments such as violin, drums and trumpet under pictures, match eight words such as lyrics, tune and gig with their meanings and complete eight sentences with words from a box. The sheet ends with a word search of twenty words; the letters left over spell a message.

Pedagogical guide

The conversation carries the words of the topic, so pupils meet each one in context before working on it. The words instrument, headphones and download are on the 5ème sheets, so they are not target words here. The tasks go from recognising words to using them: pictures, meanings, sentences, then the word search. The picture task and the sentences each have two extra words in the box, so pupils cannot finish by elimination. One sentence names Glastonbury, a famous music festival in England, as a fact. There is no word-form task on this sheet. In the word search, the words go across, down and diagonally, and the unused letters give a final message to check the grid. Every task tests words, never grammar.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Ask "What music do you listen to? Do you play an instrument?" and write the answers on the board.
  2. (10 min) Two pupils read the conversation aloud; the class answers the six questions.
  3. (10 min) Pupils write the instruments under the pictures, then match the eight words with their meanings.
  4. (10 min) Pupils complete the eight sentences with the words in the box.
  5. (10 min) Pupils find the twenty words in the word search and write the hidden message.
  6. (5 min) Check with the answer key on page 4.

Adaptations

[S] Play ten seconds of different kinds of music; pupils name each one before reading.

[A] Pupils present their favourite song in four sentences: the singer or band, the kind of music, the lyrics and why they like it. To take it further, the class makes a playlist with one song from each pupil.

Materials & prerequisites

One copy of the three pupil pages per pupil, in colour or in black and white. Page 4 is the answer key: keep it. Pupils should know the past simple and the present perfect with ever and already.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
