At the Shop!
Interactive exercises to consolidate your students’ learning.
Pupils look at a shop board with eight things and their prices, but no names, from an apple at 40p to a ball at £3. They solve six riddles with two clues each ("It's yellow. It's 30p.") and write the word, complete a shop dialogue ("Can I have a sandwich, please? How much is it?") with words from a box, then play shops with a friend. Answer key included.

Objective & content
This activity sheet is about shopping. A shop board, The Corner Shop, shows eight things, each with a picture and a price tag but no name: an apple (40p), a banana (30p), an orange (50p), a juice (80p), a chocolate (90p), an ice cream (£1), a sandwich (£2) and a ball (£3). Pupils solve riddles with the board, complete a shop dialogue and play shops with a friend. By the end, pupils name food and toy words, read prices and say Can I have a sandwich, please? How much is it? It's £2.
Pedagogical guide
Every price on the board is different, so the price always settles the answer. Task 1 is the board: look at it together and say the prices aloud ("forty p", "two pounds"); there is nothing to write, and there are no names under the pictures. Task 2 gives six riddles with two clues each ("It's yellow. It's 30p.") and a word box with the eight words. Pupils read both clues, find the thing on the board and complete "It's a ..." or "It's an ...": the article is already printed. The answers are banana, apple, ice cream, sandwich, ball and orange. The juice is orange too, but it is 80p, so the price settles riddle 6; in the black and white copy, the price alone is always enough. Two words in the box are never used: juice and chocolate. Task 3 is a dialogue between a shopkeeper and a girl with six gaps and a box of six words, each used once: help, have, much, It's, Here, Thank. Then pupils play shops in pairs with the same dialogue: the shopkeeper uses the board for the prices. Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Put price tags on a few classroom things and ask: "How much is the pencil?"
- (5 min) Task 1: look at the shop together and say the eight prices ("forty p", "two pounds").
- (10 min) Task 2: pupils read each riddle, find the thing on the board and write the word; check together.
- (5 min) Task 3: pupils complete the dialogue with the words in the box; read it aloud in two voices.
- (10 min) In pairs, pupils play shops with the dialogue: the shopkeeper uses the board, the customer chooses a thing.
Adaptations
[S] Say the eight words with the pictures first, pointing at the board.
[A] Pupils write a riddle for a partner: "It's green. It's ..."
Materials & prerequisites
One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need only a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. A few classroom things with paper price tags for the warm-up. Pupils should know the numbers up to ninety for the prices and the colours yellow, red and orange; the eight words are in the word box of task 2.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
