Teaching guide

Objective & content

This activity sheet is about the body of an alien. Pupils read about Zip, a green alien from Planet Blip, look at his picture, answer six Yes/No sentences, then read about Zap, his friend, and draw him. The sheet puts body words with numbers and colours: eyes, antennae, arms, legs, feet, hair. By the end, pupils understand and use sentences such as He's got three eyes.

Pedagogical guide

The text about Zip has four short lines: he is from Planet Blip, he is green, he has got three eyes, two antennae, four arms and two legs, his feet are big and purple, and he has got a big smile. The picture shows exactly what the text says. Pupils circle Yes or No for six sentences: Zip has got three eyes (Yes), Zip has got two arms (No, four arms), His feet are purple (Yes), Zip has got two antennae (Yes), Zip is blue (No, green) and Zip has got four legs (No, two legs). The last task is a drawing. Three lines describe Zap, a friend of Zip: he is red, he has got one big eye, six arms and three legs, long blue hair and a big smile. Pupils draw him in the frame; there is no single right drawing, so a partner checks it against the text. Page 2 gives the Yes/No key and the teacher notes.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Look at Zip together and count his eyes, arms and legs.
  2. (5 min) Pupils read the text about Zip.
  3. (5 min) Pupils circle Yes or No for the six sentences; check together.
  4. (10 min) Pupils read about Zap and draw him, then show a partner, who checks the drawing against the text.

Adaptations

[S] Read the text aloud while pupils point to each part on the picture.

[A] Pupils invent their own alien and write three sentences about it.

Materials & prerequisites

One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need only a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know the numbers up to six and the basic colours; the body words are in the text, with the picture beside it.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
