Objective & content
This activity sheet is about the clown's body and clothes. Pupils look at a line drawing of a clown, read ten sentences such as His nose is red. and colour each part the right colour, then write two sentences about their own clown. Body words and clothes with his and colours: hair, eyes, nose, mouth, hat, bow tie, buttons, jacket, trousers, shoes. By the end, pupils read and write sentences such as His hair is orange.
Pedagogical guide
The clown is a line drawing with every named part in it: a small hat, big curly hair, eyes, a round nose, a big smiling mouth, a bow tie, a jacket with three buttons, baggy trousers and big shoes. Ten sentences in two columns give the colours: His hair is orange, His eyes are blue, His nose is red, His mouth is pink, His hat is black, His bow tie is purple, His buttons are yellow, His jacket is green, His trousers are blue and His shoes are brown. Pupils read each sentence and colour only that part. The colouring is free, so there is no single finished picture: page 2 only says to check that each part has the colour of its sentence. The last task is two sentences that start His ..., about the colours of their own clown, for a friend to read. Page 2 also holds the teacher notes.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Point to the clown's hair, nose and shoes and say the words together.
- (10 min) Pupils read each sentence and colour only that part.
- (10 min) Pupils write two sentences about their own clown and read them to a partner.
Adaptations
[S] Colour the first two parts together.
[A] Pupils draw a hat of their own on the clown and describe it.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need colouring pencils (orange, blue, red, pink, black, purple, yellow, green and brown) and a pencil; no scissors or glue. Page 2 holds the colouring check and teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know the colours; the body and clothes words are in the sentences, next to the picture.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
