Teaching guide

Objective & content

This activity sheet is about asking questions on the family. Pupils ask three friends five questions with Have you got ...? and write the answers in a grid, then fill in their own family tree and write two sentences about their family. By the end, pupils ask Have you got a sister? and answer Yes, I have. or No, I haven't.

Pedagogical guide

Task 1 is a class survey. The grid has five questions ("Have you got a sister?", "Have you got a brother?", "Have you got a baby in your family?", "Have you got a grandad?", "Have you got a cousin?") and three columns, with a top row for each friend's name. Pupils walk round the class, ask three friends and write yes or no. Task 2 is a family tree of six boxes (Grandma, Grandad, Mum, Dad, Me, Sister / Brother) where pupils write the names of their own family; they can leave a box empty or add one. Task 3 gives two sentence starters, I've got ... and I haven't got ..., for two sentences about their family. Every answer is about the pupils themselves, so there is nothing to correct: page 2 gives the teacher notes only.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Practise the question and the two answers with the class: "Have you got a sister?" "Yes, I have. / No, I haven't."
  2. (10 min) Task 1: pupils walk round the class, ask three friends the five questions and write yes or no.
  3. (5 min) Task 2: pupils write the names of their own family in the family tree.
  4. (5 min) Task 3: pupils write two sentences about their family.

Adaptations

[S] Write "Yes, I have. / No, I haven't." on the board for the whole activity.

[A] Pupils report one answer to the class: "Lena has got two sisters."

Materials & prerequisites

One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need only a pencil, and room to walk round the class for Task 1. Page 2 is the teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know the family words; they are written in the questions and in the boxes of the tree.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
