Objective & content
This activity sheet is about the family. Two children, Anya and Nikhil, each present their family in a short text with a portrait. Pupils read the texts, circle Yes or No for eight sentences, then write about their own family. By the end, pupils say I've got a baby brother. and My grandma lives with us.
Pedagogical guide
Task 1 has two texts. Anya: "Hi! I'm Anya and I'm ten. I live with my mum and my dad." She has got a baby brother, who is one, and her grandma lives with them too; her grandma has got a cat. Nikhil is nine; he has got two sisters and a brother, his sisters are twelve and his brother is six, and his uncle has got a big dog. Under each text, four sentences with is and has got to circle Yes or No. For each text two are true and two are not: Anya has got a brother, not a sister; Grandma has got a cat, not a dog; Nikhil has got one brother, not two; the uncle has got a dog, not a cat. Task 2 gives three sentence starters (I live with my ..., I've got ..., My ...) for pupils to write about their own family. Page 2 gives the answer key (Anya: Yes, No, Yes, No; Nikhil: Yes, No, Yes, No) and the teacher notes.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Read Anya's text with the class.
- (5 min) Pupils circle Yes or No for Anya's four sentences and say why: "No, she's got a brother."
- (5 min) Pupils read Nikhil's text alone and circle Yes or No; check together.
- (10 min) Task 2: pupils write three sentences about their own family and read them to a partner.
Adaptations
[S] Read both texts aloud before pupils start.
[A] Pupils ask a partner "Have you got a sister?" and write the answer.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need only a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know the numbers up to twelve (Anya is ten, the sisters are twelve) and the family words brother, sister, grandma and uncle.
