Teaching guide

Objective & content

This activity sheet introduces three friends, Bruno, Selin and Solomon. Each one talks about themselves in two short lines: their age, their pets or their family, what they like and what they can do. Pupils read the three texts, check nine sentences with Yes or No, then write the same about themselves. By the end, pupils read and write four structures: I'm nine., I've got a dog., I like football., I can swim.

Pedagogical guide

Task 1 has three boxes, each with a picture of the child, a short text and three sentences to check. Bruno is nine, has got a dog called Toffee, likes football and can swim. Selin is ten, has got a cat and a little brother, loves pizza and can play the guitar, but she can't swim. Solomon is nine too, has got two sisters and a rabbit, likes bananas and can ride a bike. Each sentence checks one fact from one text, and each "No" sentence changes one detail (Bruno has got a cat, Selin can swim, Solomon likes apples), so pupils have to go back to the text: ask them to say why ("Bruno has got a dog, not a cat."). The texts say I'm and I've got, the sentences say is and has got, so pupils meet both forms. Task 2 turns it round: pupils draw themselves in the frame and complete four sentence starters ("I'm", "I've got", "I like", "I can"), then read them to a partner, who asks one question ("Can you swim?"). Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Introduce yourself to the class in four sentences: "I'm ... I've got ... I like ... I can ..."
  2. (5 min) Task 1: read Bruno's text together; pupils circle Yes or No for each sentence and say why.
  3. (10 min) Pupils read about Selin and Solomon alone and circle the answers; check with the answer key.
  4. (10 min) Task 2: pupils draw themselves and complete the four sentences.
  5. (10 min) In pairs, pupils read their sentences aloud; the partner asks one question: "Can you swim?"

Adaptations

[S] Read all three texts aloud before pupils answer.

[A] Pupils write one more sentence about a friend in the class: "My friend has got a cat."

Materials & prerequisites

One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need a pencil and colouring pencils for their portrait. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know the numbers one to ten and a few words for pets and family (dog, cat, rabbit, brother, sister).

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
