Objective & content
Five Christmas activity sheets in one PDF, for the last weeks of the autumn term with a class working at A0+. Pupils play four games with Christmas words, crack a picture code, find things in a Christmas picture, write a letter to Father Christmas and colour a mystery picture. A contents page opens the pack, and the answers and teacher notes for every sheet are at the back. Each sheet is also on the site on its own.
Pedagogical guide
The order goes from recognising the Christmas words to writing with them. Christmas Fun! comes first: four short games on one page introduce the words. The code and the I Spy picture use them again, first for spelling, then in sentences with There is and There are. The letter to Father Christmas asks pupils to write about themselves with I'm, I like, I can and Can I have ..., please?. The mystery picture is a calm end: pupils read number words and colour words.
Suggested procedure
- (30 min) Christmas Fun!: four games with Christmas words (riddles, a word search, word scrambles and a hidden star). A good start.
- (20 min) Crack the Christmas Code!: each shape is a letter; pupils decode five Christmas words and the message "Merry Christmas".
- (25 min) I Spy at Christmas!: a living room on Christmas morning; pupils tick the words they find in the picture and check six sentences.
- (30 min) A Letter to Father Christmas!: pupils read Edie's letter, then write their own and read it to a partner.
- (20 min) Christmas Mystery Picture!: pupils read the number word in each square and colour it to find a Christmas picture.
About 125 minutes in all: use the sheets in this order over several lessons, or pick the ones you need.
Adaptations
[S] Read each text and word list aloud before pupils start, and do the first item of each task together.
[A] Fast finishers write one more sentence of their own about Christmas on the back of each sheet. The page of each sheet on the site gives more ideas.
Materials & prerequisites
One photocopy per pupil of each sheet, in colour or in black and white (the pack comes in both versions). Pupils need a pencil, and colouring pencils for Christmas Mystery Picture! only. Keep the answer pages at the back for yourself. No Christmas words are needed before the pack: Christmas Fun! introduces them.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
