Objective & content
This activity sheet is all about feelings. Selin, the girl at the top of the page, asks "How do you feel today?", and pupils look at eight children's faces, each showing one feeling. They write the right word under each face, then read six little situations and choose the feeling that fits, and finally draw their own face for today. By the end, pupils read and write eight feelings words (happy, sad, angry, scared, tired, surprised, bored, excited) and say how they feel with I'm ("I'm tired.").
Pedagogical guide
The faces carry the meaning, so pupils can work out every word without a translation. Task 1 gives the eight words in a box and eight numbered faces: a big smile, a tear, a frown with red cheeks, hands at the mouth, a yawn, an open mouth, a chin on the hand, two raised fists. Pupils write each word once, so the last faces are easier. Task 2 moves from the picture to the reason: six short situations, each ending with "I'm ...", and three feelings to choose from ("There's a big spider on my bed! I'm ..." gives scared). Only one of the three words fits each time. Task 3 is about the pupil: they draw their face today in the frame and complete "Today I'm", then tell a partner. Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Mime a few feelings and let the class guess: "You're angry!"
- (10 min) Task 1: pupils read the words in the box and write the right word under each face; check together.
- (10 min) Task 2: pupils read each situation and circle the feeling.
- (5 min) Task 3: pupils draw their face and complete "Today I'm".
- (5 min) In pairs, pupils ask "How do you feel today?" and answer with their sentence.
Adaptations
[S] Read the words in the box aloud together, with a mime for each, before Task 1.
[A] Pupils write a situation for one more feeling: "I'm surprised. There's a ..."
Materials & prerequisites
One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need only a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know I'm and a few everyday words (birthday, cake, spider, ice cream, zoo); the feelings words themselves are taught by the faces.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
