About the series

One road, 2,448 miles, 1926 to 1985 — and everything that happened on it. Route 66 ran from Chicago to Los Angeles across eight states, and for fifty-nine years it carried almost everyone going west: families leaving the Dust Bowl, workers heading for the war factories, and holidaymakers stopping at motels built to be read at fifty miles an hour. In 1985 the road lost its number and came off the map. People still drive it. Follow the Mother Road from the first sign in Chicago to the last mile in California.

    Route 66

The road America still drives for fun. From Chicago to Los Angeles across eight states, Route 66 lost its number in 1985, but never its travellers: today people drive it for the diners, the neon and the small towns along the way.
