Le trappole da evitare
1. Famiglia -ink → -ank → -unk
Shrink → shrank → shrunk segue lo schema di drink → drank → drunk, sing → sang → sung, swim → swam → swum. Mai shrinked ❌: impara la famiglia intera, la vocale cambia i → a → u.
2. It shrank itself ❌
In italiano il verbo è riflessivo: il maglione si è ristretto. In inglese no: My sweater shrank ✓, mai My sweater shrank itself ❌. Sulle etichette trovi anche pre-shrunk = già ristretto, cioè trattato per non restringersi più in lavatrice.

Che differenza c'è tra shrank e shrunk?+
Shrank = past simple (forma classica, UK e US). Shrunk = participio passato (ovunque), usato anche come past simple nell'inglese americano informale. Il film americano «Honey, I Shrunk the Kids» (1989, in Italia «Tesoro, mi si sono ristretti i ragazzi») ha reso famoso shrunk al past simple.
Esiste la parola shrunken?+
Sì, ma è poco comune. Shrunken si usa solo come aggettivo, davanti a un nome: shrunken cheeks = guance scavate, shrunken muscles = muscoli atrofizzati. Nei tempi composti si usa invece shrunk: The shirt has shrunk.
Perché shrink significa psicologo in inglese?+
Nello slang americano a shrink è l'abbreviazione scherzosa di headshrinker, letteralmente «restringitore di teste»: è un modo informale per indicare lo psichiatra o lo psicologo, come l'italiano strizzacervelli. I see a shrink = vado dallo psicologo.
Cosa significa pre-shrunk sull'etichetta dei vestiti?+
Pre-shrunk = già ristretto. Il capo è stato trattato prima della vendita per non restringersi più in lavatrice: non perderà la sua taglia. Si trova spesso sull'etichetta di jeans e magliette di cotone.
