1. Insegnare (una materia, una lingua)
- She teaches English. (Insegna inglese.)
- He teaches at a high school. (Insegna alle superiori.)
2. Insegnare a qualcuno (trasmettere)
Teach + persona + how to + verbo.
- He taught me how to play guitar. (Mi ha insegnato a suonare la chitarra.)
- My mum taught me cooking. (Mia mamma mi ha insegnato a cucinare.)
Le trappole da evitare
1. Teacher = professore
Teach + -er = teacher, la parola più usata della famiglia: my English teacher = «il mio prof di inglese». Occhio alla maiuscola: in italiano la materia si scrive minuscola (inglese), in inglese English va sempre con la maiuscola.
2. Teach + persona, senza to
In italiano insegni a qualcuno, e viene spontaneo scrivere She teaches to me English ❌. In inglese la persona segue subito il verbo: She teaches me English ✓, oppure He taught me how to swim ✓.

Il past simple di to teach è taught, invariabile. Il participio passato è taught. Teach → taught → taught.
Che differenza c'è tra teach e learn?+
Teach = insegnare, chi trasmette. Learn = imparare, chi riceve. The teacher teaches the students. The students learn. Non si dice mai I learn my brother per «insegno a mio fratello».
Come si pronuncia taught?+
Taught si pronuncia /tɔːt/, come bought (/bɔːt/), caught (/kɔːt/), thought (/θɔːt/), fought (/fɔːt/). È la famiglia degli -ought: il gh non si pronuncia.
Come si dice «insegnare a qualcuno a fare qualcosa» in inglese?+
Teach + persona + how to + verbo. He taught me how to swim = mi ha insegnato a nuotare. Si può anche dire teach + persona + cosa: She teaches me English. In tutti e due i casi la persona segue il verbo senza preposizione.
Perché non si dice «teached»?+
Perché teach è irregolare: il past simple è taught, della famiglia degli -ought, con il gh muto. Teached non esiste.
