The objective is to improve comprehension of a written narrative, discuss themes of loneliness, integration and friendship, and reinforce vocabulary related to emotions and hobbies.

"A New Sky" is the story of Maksym, a Ukrainian boy who has just arrived in Birmingham (UK) to flee the war. He feels lonely and misses his hobby, birdwatching. In a park, he meets a local boy, Liam, who is aggressive towards him. The next day, for his first day at his new school, Maksym is very nervous. He discovers that a girl from Liam's group, Kayla, shares his passion for drawing birds. By plucking up the courage to talk to her during lunch, Maksym makes a new friend, which changes his perspective on his new life.

Suggested Sequence

Before the activity (~5 min): HOBBIES AND EMOTIONS

Ask students to list some hobbies like drawing or football. Then, ask them to name the emotions one might feel on a first day at a new school (shy, nervous, excited...). This helps pre-teach key vocabulary.

During the activity (~15-20 min): READING THE STORY

First reading: Have students read the story (individually or taking turns reading aloud), focusing on general understanding of the plot.
Comprehension check: Ask questions about the main events: "Where is Maksym from?", "Why is he in Birmingham?", "What is his hobby?", "Who is Liam?", "Who is Kayla?".

After the activity (~10 min): LET'S TALK ABOUT IT!

In small groups or as a whole class, initiate a discussion about the story's themes.
Possible questions: "Why was Liam aggressive at the beginning?", "What helped Maksym and Kayla become friends?", "How did Liam change at the end? Why?".

Adaptations

To simplify: Read the story aloud to the class, pausing at each illustration to ask simple questions about what is happening ("Is Maksym happy here? No."). Focus on emotion vocabulary using the images.
To deepen: Ask students to write a short diary entry from Maksym's or Kayla's perspective after their first meeting, describing the day's events and their feelings.
