Suggested Procedure

Before the activity (~5 min): THEMATIC WARM-UP

  • Write the title of the selected Set (e.g., "A1 Vocabulary - Set 1: Food & Basics" [cite: 2]) on the board and ask students to individually list 3 words they expect to find in this theme (activation of prior knowledge).

  • Solve the first scrambled word collectively (e.g., PLEAP for APPLE [cite: 4]) to ensure everyone understands the instruction "Unscramble the letters to make a word!"[cite: 3].

During the activity (~15-20 min): DECODING AND COOPERATION

  • Step 1: Individual Resolution. Students fill in the "Answer" column independently, using the "Hint" column to help them, which strengthens reading comprehension (RC) and autonomy. The teacher circulates to provide occasional assistance.

  • Step 2: Pair Check. Students work in pairs and compare their answers. In case of disagreement, they must argue in English to justify their choice or find the answer together, promoting oral interaction (OI).

  • Step 3: Collective Correction and Reformulation. The teacher corrects. For each word, they ask a student to give the word, then use the hint to make a complete sentence (e.g., "A red or green fruit is an apple." [cite: 4]).

After the activity (~10-15 min): CREATION AND REUSE

  • **Oral/Written Production (OP/WP):** Ask students to choose 3 words from the set they have just completed and to write or say 3 original sentences using these words in a context different from the hint provided (e.g., instead of "A place for students"[cite: 4], the sentence could be "I walk to school with my friends every day.").

  • **"Create Your Own Scramble" Challenge:** Students invent a new scrambled word on the same theme for their neighbor, with an original hint, and the neighbor must solve it.


Adaptations

  • To simplify: Provide a word bank of unscrambled words from the chosen set ("Answers") in advance. Students must first match the words (Answer) to the clues (Hint), then only decode the scrambled word (Scrambled Word), transforming the activity into a double association (meaning/spelling).

  • To deepen: Use a higher-level set (e.g., B1 for an A2 class)[cite: 242, 248]. Ask students to find a synonym or antonym for each word found, or to classify the words by grammatical categories (verb, noun, adjective).
