The resource is a word scramble exercise offering six words to decipher. Each scrambled word (ex: TUNA, CELNU, DRANNOGS) is associated with a relational definition (Hint) (ex: "Your mother's sister", "Your father's brother", "Your son's or daughter's son"). Students must decode these letters to identify the correct words, which are **AUNT**, **UNCLE**, **CHILD**, **BABY**, **GRANDSON**, and **GRANDDAUGHTER**. The exercise places particular emphasis on indirect kinship relations.


Suggested Procedure

Before the activity (~5 min): ORAL FAMILY TREE

  • Draw a simple family tree diagram on the board and name basic family members (Mother, Father). Orally introduce the resource's hints ("Your mother's sister...") and have students guess the relationship before starting the deciphering.

  • Highlight the feminine/masculine pairs: AUNT/UNCLE and GRANDSON/GRANDDAUGHTER, as well as the relationship between CHILD and BABY.

During the activity (~15-20 min): DECODING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Step 1: Individual or pair work. Students first focus on understanding the Hint to identify the expected word. For long words (**GRANDDAUGHTER**), encourage them to break down the letters.

  • Step 2: Conduct a cross-check after the first four words, asking students to use their own families as examples to validate the meaning of the words (Ex: "Who is your AUNT?").

  • Step 3: Collective correction and spelling of each word. Emphasize the structure of **GRANDDAUGHTER** (the longest) and the tricky spelling of **TUNA** (AUNT).

After the activity (~5-10 min): FAMILY PRESENTATION

  • **Oral Production:** Ask students to create three (A1) sentences about a family member using at least one decoded word (Ex: "My UNCLE likes to COOK." "I have a new BABY cousin.").

  • **The Parent's Challenge:** Ask students to choose two words from the list and combine them into a simple sentence to explain a complex relationship (Ex: "My son's son is my GRANDSON.").


Adaptations

  • To simplify: Provide the answer words in a "Word Bank" so students only need to match them to the hints, focusing on the final decoding.

  • To extend: Introduce the notions of possession (*My Uncle's car*). Ask students to create a table of professions and places of residence (seen in previous sets) for these family members (Ex: "My UNCLE works in an OFFICE.").
