Objective & Activity Overview

The pedagogical objective of this worksheet is to reactivate and consolidate the spelling memorization of fundamental A1 level vocabulary, particularly qualifying adjectives (BIG, COLD) and familiar common nouns (CAR, BALL, KITCHEN). The resource is a "scrambled words" (Word Scramble) exercise where the student must decode six words (BLUE, BIG, CAR, BALL, COLD, KITCHEN) from their jumbled letters (e.g., EBUL, GIB, DLOC, NEHCTIK). The process is guided by simple clues ("Hint") based on definitions or oppositions (e.g., "The opposite of hot"; "The room where you cook"). This method strongly engages deduction.

Suggested Procedure

Before the activity (~5 min): OPPOSITIONS CHALLENGE

  • Adjective Activation: Write a word on the board (e.g., "hot" or "small") and ask students to find its opposite in English. This prepares them for decoding the words BIG and COLD.

  • Color Review: Ask students to name several colors in English, including BLUE, to activate this lexical field.

During the activity (~15-20 min): TIMED INVESTIGATION AND DECODING

  • Step 1: The "Silence Challenge": Distribute the worksheet and give students 8 minutes to decode the 6 words (BLUE, BIG, CAR, BALL, COLD, KITCHEN) silently and individually. Emphasis is placed on correct spelling.

  • Step 2: Correction and Usage: Project the worksheet without the answers. Ask students, in turn, to give a word. Write the correct answer and ask for a short example sentence using that word (e.g., "The car is blue"; "It is cold in the kitchen").

After the activity (~10-15 min): CREATE DEFINITIONS

  • Written Production: Ask students to choose two or three of the found words (e.g., CAR, BALL, KITCHEN) and write one or two sentences to describe an object or place using the decoded vocabulary.

  • Adjective Extension: Revisit BIG and COLD. Ask students to list other adjectives they know and find their opposites (e.g., long/short; happy/sad).

Adaptations

  • To simplify (A0/Beginner Level): For the word KITCHEN (the longest), provide phonetic help or say "It's a room in the house" before they read the clue.

  • To deepen (Towards A2 Level): Introduce the concept of comparatives and superlatives for the adjectives found (BIG → bigger, biggest) and have them used in simple sentences.
