Resource Objective & Content
The pedagogical objective is to introduce and consolidate family member vocabulary as well as the use of the Simple Present (in the 3rd person singular) to describe likes and habits.
The song "My Fun Family" is a joyful song that introduces different family members: father, mother, uncle, aunt, brother, and sister. For each person, the song uses the structure "This is my..." followed by a sentence in the Simple Present describing what they like to do (e.g., "This is my dad. He loves to make a cake.", "This is my aunt. She loves to sing."). The chorus, which also mentions grandparents, celebrates this "fun family".
Suggested Procedure
Before the activity (~5 min): MY FAMILY TREE
Draw a very simple family tree on the board with schematic characters. Ask students to name each family member (mom, dad, brother, etc.) and write down the vocabulary.
During the activity (~10 min): LISTEN AND MIMIC
First listening: Distribute flashcards of different family members. Students must raise the correct card when they hear the word in the song.
Second listening: Play the song again. This time, students must mimic the action associated with each person (pretend to bake a cake for the father, laugh for the mother, sing for the aunt, etc.).
After the activity (~10 min): HERE IS MY FRIEND
Show an image of a cartoon character known to the students. In a large group, invent what this character likes to do, following the song's model.
The teacher starts: "This is my friend, Pikachu. He loves to..." and students suggest actions (e.g., "...run!", "...play!").
Adaptations
To simplify: Focus solely on recognizing family vocabulary. During the song, the teacher shows a flashcard and students must repeat the word in unison.
To deepen: Students can draw a member of their own family and write a simple sentence below, following the song's model: "This is my sister. She likes to read.".
