Teaching guide

Objective & content

Five activity sheets about the body in one PDF, for a class working at A0+. The pack teaches one point, the body, through five kinds of activity: pupils label a girl's body and complete sentences such as I see with my eyes., read a story and play Simon Says, read about a green alien and draw his friend, colour a clown from sentences, and walk round the class asking questions. A contents page opens the pack, and the answers and teacher notes for every sheet are at the back. Each sheet is also on the site on its own.

Pedagogical guide

The order goes from learning the body words to using them. My Body! comes first: pupils label nine parts of a girl's body, complete six sentences such as I see with my eyes. and play Simon says in pairs. Simon Says! uses the words in a short story with orders such as Touch your nose! and ends with a word search. Zip from Planet Blip! is a reading sheet: body words with numbers and colours, He's got three eyes., Yes/No sentences and a drawing of Zap. Colour the Clown! puts his with body words, clothes and colours: pupils colour what each sentence says. Find Someone Who... ends with speaking: pupils ask Have you got ...? and Can you ...? round the class and write about two friends.

Suggested procedure

  1. (25 min) My Body!: pupils label a girl's body and complete sentences such as I see with my eyes.
  2. (25 min) Simon Says!: pupils read the story, circle six words, write two orders and find ten words in a word search.
  3. (25 min) Zip from Planet Blip!: pupils read about Zip, circle Yes or No for six sentences, then read about Zap and draw him.
  4. (25 min) Colour the Clown!: pupils read ten sentences and colour the clown, then write two sentences.
  5. (20 min) Find Someone Who...: pupils walk round the class asking eight questions, then draw two friends and write about them.

About 120 minutes in all: use the sheets in this order over several lessons, or pick the ones you need.

Adaptations

[S] Read each text and word list aloud before pupils start, and do the first item of each task together.

[A] Fast finishers write one more sentence about the body on the back of each sheet. The page of each sheet on the site gives more ideas.

Materials & prerequisites

One photocopy per pupil of each sheet, in colour or in black and white (the pack comes in both versions). Pupils need a pencil, and colouring pencils for Colour the Clown! only. Leave room for pupils to walk round the class for Find Someone Who.... Keep the answer pages at the back for yourself. No body words are needed before the pack: My Body! introduces them.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
