Objective & content
This sheet on the body teaches the parts of the body, from head, eyes and mouth to shoulders, knees and toes, with action words such as touch, clap, wave, point, jump and nod. Pupils read Amira's text about a game of Simon says in PE, then name actions and parts of the body. By the end, they can name the parts of the body and understand simple instructions with them ("Touch your toes!").
Pedagogical guide
Page 1 is Amira's text: at the start of PE, Mr Bennett plays Simon says with the class. Pupils follow an instruction only when it starts with "Simon says", and Callum is out when he shakes his head without it. Eight multiple-choice questions follow. Page 2 has six pictures of actions to name, such as clap, wave, touch your toes and stand on one leg; the word box holds two extra words, so pupils must choose. Pupils then match eight parts of the body with what you do with them ("You smell flowers with it."). Page 3 has ten sentences where pupils unscramble the word in brackets (SEOT, GRINFES, DROSHULES), then a picture of a boy doing a stretch to label with eleven words from a box that holds two extra words. Every task tests words only. The text uses imperatives, the present simple and can: there is no past tense on the sheet.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Point to your head, your eyes and your nose; pupils say the English words they know.
- (10 min) Read Amira's text aloud; pupils answer the questions.
- (7 min) Page 2: pupils write the actions under the pictures, then compare in pairs.
- (5 min) Pupils match the parts of the body and the sentences.
- (8 min) Page 3: pupils unscramble the words and complete the sentences.
- (7 min) Pupils label the boy with the words in the box.
- (5 min) Check with the answer key on page 4.
Adaptations
[S] Play Simon says with the class before reading the text.
[A] Pupils give the instructions in the game.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy of pages 1 to 3 per pupil; some space to move helps for the game. Page 4 is the answer key and teacher notes: keep it. Pupils need the present simple, can and simple imperatives. To take it further, pupils draw a monster and describe it ("It has three eyes and six legs").
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
