Teaching guide

Objective & content

By the end, A1 students can describe their daily routine aloud using present simple and telling the time. This speaking deck gives 24 "My day" chat prompts covering morning, school, and evening routines, each with a sentence-frame scaffold. It plays on screen (draw and shuffle) or prints as a single A4 sheet of cut-out cards.

Pedagogical guide

Use this deck once present simple and clock times are introduced — daily routine is the topic students practise present simple on most, and this deck turns that practice into real speaking. Each frame supplies the structure ("I get up at ___."), so students focus on times and routine verbs. No question-forming is expected at A1.

Suggested procedure

  1. (2 min) Form groups of 3–4 and shuffle or display the deck.
  2. (1 min) Model one card: read the question, complete the frame aloud.
  3. (8–10 min) Students take turns drawing a card and answering aloud using the frame; the teacher circulates and prompts extra detail where possible.
  4. (2 min) Whole-class share-out: ask 2–3 students about part of their day.

Adaptations

  • [S] Accept one completed sentence per card; allow approximate times ("in the morning") instead of exact clock times.
  • [A] Add one more sentence beyond the frame, sequencing two actions with then.

Materials & prerequisites

Plays on screen (draw/shuffle) or prints as a single A4 sheet of cut-out cards. Assumes present simple, telling the time, and daily-routine vocabulary.

Curriculum alignment

Maps to Cycle 3 "child and close environment" (FR 6e) — the child's daily routine and timetable.

Assessment & extensions

Listen for correct present simple and time expressions as an informal speaking check. Extend with a written "my typical day" timeline, or move to the A2 My Day deck once past simple and reasons are the goal.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
