Teaching guide

Objective & content

Five activity sheets about feelings in one PDF, for a class working at A0+. The pack teaches one point, feelings, through five kinds of activity: pupils say how the body feels, link feelings to actions, label fifteen faces and answer How are you?, read a story about a first day at school, and explore a party picture before asking their friends how they feel. A contents page opens the pack, and the answers and teacher notes for every sheet are at the back. Each sheet is also on the site on its own.

Pedagogical guide

The order goes from the basics to the full picture. I'm Hungry! comes first: pupils name six body feelings, link seven to what a child needs, and answer Are you ...? Yes, I am. / No, I'm not. When I'm Angry, I Shout! adds seven actions and When I'm ..., I ..., with five jars to colour. How Are You? gives fifteen feelings on faces and the five answers to How are you?, from great to not great. My First Day! uses the new feelings in a short story, with She's ... and because. The Party! ends the pack: pupils find the feelings in one picture, explain why with because, and ask three friends how they feel, which revises all the words.

Suggested procedure

  1. (25 min) I'm Hungry!: pupils name body feelings, link them to what a child needs and answer for Ben.
  2. (25 min) When I'm Angry, I Shout!: pupils learn seven actions, circle the action for each feeling and colour five jars.
  3. (30 min) How Are You?: pupils write the word under fifteen faces and complete two dialogues.
  4. (25 min) My First Day!: pupils read Nadia's story, write how she feels and circle why.
  5. (25 min) The Party!: pupils tick what they see in a party picture, circle why and ask three friends.

About 130 minutes in all: use the sheets in this order over several lessons, or pick the ones you need.

Adaptations

[S] Read each text and word list aloud before pupils start, and do the first item of each task together.

[A] Fast finishers write one more sentence about feelings on the back of each sheet. The page of each sheet on the site gives more ideas.

Materials & prerequisites

One photocopy per pupil of each sheet, in colour or in black and white (the pack comes in both versions). Pupils need a pencil, and colouring pencils for When I'm Angry, I Shout! only. Pupils need to know I'm and to be; the pack introduces all the feelings words. Keep the answer pages at the back for yourself. The Party! can also be used on its own as a taster.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
