Objective & content
Five activity sheets about describing people in one PDF, for a class working at A0+. The pack teaches one point, describing people, through five kinds of activity: pupils label the words, read and colour hair and eyes, solve riddles and play Guess Who!, read and draw Samira's family, and look for people in a park picture. A contents page opens the pack, and the answers and teacher notes for every sheet are at the back. Each sheet is also on the site on its own.
Pedagogical guide
The order goes from the words to the full picture. Look at Me! comes first: pupils write twelve words under pictures (tall, old, glasses, a beard, long curly hair ...), match six sentences to pictures and say He's tall. She's got long curly hair. Read and Colour! adds hair and eye colours: pupils colour five children, find who is who and write about themselves with I've got ... Guess Who! turns the words into a game: pupils read six riddles about ten people, then ask Have you got glasses? and answer Yes, I have. / No, I haven't. Read and Draw! turns reading into drawing: pupils draw Samira's grandma, dad and sister, draw themselves and ask three friends. At the Park! ends the pack: pupils find people in a busy picture, circle Yes or No and say sentences for a partner to point to.
Suggested procedure
- (25 min) Look at Me!: pupils write twelve describing words under pictures and match six sentences to pictures.
- (25 min) Read and Colour!: pupils colour the hair and eyes of five children, find who is who and write about themselves.
- (25 min) Guess Who!: pupils read six riddles about ten people, then play Guess Who! in pairs.
- (25 min) Read and Draw!: pupils draw Samira's family from the lines, draw themselves and ask three friends.
- (25 min) At the Park!: pupils find people in a park picture, circle Yes or No and play in pairs.
About 125 minutes in all: use the sheets in this order over several lessons, or pick the ones you need.
Adaptations
[S] Read each text and word list aloud before pupils start, and do the first item of each task together.
[A] Fast finishers write one more sentence about a person on the back of each sheet. The page of each sheet on the site gives more ideas.
Materials & prerequisites
One photocopy per pupil of each sheet, in colour or in black and white (the pack comes in both versions). Pupils need a pencil, and colouring pencils for Read and Colour! only. Pupils need to know I'm and to be; the pack introduces all the describing words. Keep the answer pages at the back for yourself. At the Park! can also be used on its own.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
