Objective & content
This activity sheet is about the classroom. A big picture shows an empty classroom with eight numbered things: a green board, a blue door, a big window, a clock on the wall, a globe on the teacher's desk, a book on a pupil's desk, a red school bag on the floor and a blue chair. There is more to see: a bookcase, a plant by the window, and a pencil, a ruler and a rubber on the front desk. Pupils name the eight things, check sentences about the picture and draw their own school bag. By the end, pupils name classroom objects and say There's a clock on the wall.
Pedagogical guide
Everything on the sheet points back to the picture, so pupils check each answer with their eyes. Task 1 gives a word box with the eight words (board, door, window, clock, globe, book, bag, chair) and eight numbered lines: pupils write the word for each number. Each number points at one thing only: the big objects carry their number, and the small ones have a line to them. Task 2 gives six sentences with There's ("There's a clock on the wall.") and pupils look again and circle Yes or No. Three are true (the clock, the pencil on the desk, the plant) and three are not: there is no dog, no teacher and no cat in the room. No sentence depends on a colour, so the black and white copy works just as well. Task 3 asks pupils to draw their own school bag and complete "In my school bag I've got a ...". Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Point at things in your classroom: "What's this? It's a window!"
- (10 min) Task 1: pupils write the word for each number; check together.
- (5 min) Task 2: pupils read the six sentences, look at the picture again and circle Yes or No.
- (10 min) Task 3: pupils draw their school bag and complete the sentence.
- (5 min) In pairs, pupils tell a partner what is in their bag: "In my school bag I've got a pencil."
Adaptations
[S] Say the eight words together first, pointing at the real objects in your classroom.
[A] Pupils write two more sentences about the picture: "The bag is red."
Materials & prerequisites
One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need only a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know a few school words used in the sentences (pencil, desk, wall); the eight words to find are in the word box.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
