Teaching guide

Objective & content

This activity sheet is about family words. It has three word games on one page: pupils write the word under seven portraits, solve seven riddles and find eight words in a word search. Ten family words in all: mum, dad, sister, brother, baby, grandma, grandad, aunt, uncle and cousin. By the end, pupils name the people in a family and understand sentences such as I'm the mum of your mum.

Pedagogical guide

Task 1 gives seven portraits and a box of seven words (baby, mum, grandad, sister, dad, brother, grandma). The portraits are a woman, a man, a girl, a boy, a baby, an old woman and an old man, so each word fits one portrait only; pupils write the word under each one. Task 2 is seven riddles of two short sentences, each ending with I'm your ...: "I'm a girl. I've got the same mum and dad as you." (sister), "I'm old. I'm the mum of your mum." (grandma). The answers are sister, brother, grandma, grandad, aunt, uncle and cousin; the box has eight words, so baby is left over. Aunt, uncle and cousin appear only in this task, where the riddle says who they are. Task 3 is a word search of ten by ten letters with eight words to find (mum, dad, sister, brother, grandma, grandad, aunt, uncle), across, down and diagonal; pupils tick each word in the list when they find it. Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Draw a small family tree on the board and say the family words with the class.
  2. (5 min) Task 1: pupils write the word under each person; check together.
  3. (10 min) Task 2: pupils read each riddle and write the word.
  4. (5 min) Task 3: pupils find the eight words in the grid and tick them in the list.

Adaptations

[S] Say the family words with the pictures before pupils start.

[A] Pupils write a riddle for a partner: "I'm the dad of your dad."

Materials & prerequisites

One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need only a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know I'm a girl, I'm a boy and I've got; the words for Tasks 1 and 2 are in the boxes, and the word search lists its words under the grid.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
