At the Café!
Interactive exercises to consolidate your students’ learning.
Pupils look at a café counter and write the six foods they see (soup, sandwich, cake, orange juice, ice cream, pizza). Then they complete a short dialogue between a waiter and a girl, such as Can I have a cake, please?, with the words in a box, read it in pairs and play cafés: one pupil is the waiter, the other orders from the counter. Objective & content
This activity sheet is about ordering food and drink in a café. Pupils look at a café counter and write the six foods, complete a dialogue between a waiter and a girl, then play cafés in pairs. By the end, pupils say Can I have a cake, please? Here you are. Thank you!
Pedagogical guide
In task 1 pupils look at a picture of a café counter with six numbered places and write the food in each place, using a box of six words (cake, ice cream, orange juice, pizza, sandwich, soup). In task 2 they complete a four-line dialogue between a waiter and a girl with five words from a box (Hello, have, please, are, you), one answer for each gap, then read it with a friend. In task 3 they play cafés: one pupil is the waiter, the other orders from the counter, for example Can I have a pizza, please?, and they swap. The request and the replies (Here you are! Thank you!) are given as a fixed formula. Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.
Suggested procedure
- (4 min) Set a table as a café counter with two or three real things and let pupils name them.
- (6 min) Task 1: pupils look at the counter and write the six foods; check with the answer key.
- (7 min) Task 2: pupils complete the dialogue with the words in the box, then read it in pairs.
- (8 min) Task 3: pupils play cafés in pairs, one waiter and one customer, then swap roles.
Adaptations
[S] Read the dialogue together twice.
[A] Pupils order two things (Can I have soup and juice, please?).
Materials & prerequisites
One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need a pencil. For the warm-up and the role play you can set a table with two or three real things, or use the picture of the counter. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. The sheet gives the six food words in a box, so pupils need no food words beforehand.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
