Objective & content
This documentary episode looks at what the Romans changed in Britain during their occupation. It presents the new towns (Londinium, now London, and Eboracum, now York), the roads such as Watling Street, the mention of slaves as a difficult part of history, and the emperors Septimus Severus and Constantine. It ends with the departure of the last Roman soldiers around 410. The language focus is the past simple (was/were and common verbs such as built, came and went), with vocabulary for historical dates, famous people and government. Learners practise listening for key facts. A line to quote: "The Romans were great builders."
