1. Combattere (in senso fisico o figurato)
- The two boys fought in the playground. — I due ragazzi si sono picchiati in cortile.
- She fights cancer. — Combatte contro il cancro.
2. Fight for / fight against
Fight for = battersi per. Fight against = lottare contro.
- They fight for freedom. — Si battono per la libertà.
- We fight against injustice. — Lottiamo contro l'ingiustizia.
Le trappole da evitare
1. Fought non si legge come si scrive
L'italiano si legge come si scrive, quindi fought invita a pronunciare tutte le lettere. In realtà il gruppo ough vale /ɔː/ e il gh è muto: fought = /fɔːt/, una sillaba sola, come bought /bɔːt/, thought /θɔːt/, caught /kɔːt/.
2. Fight o argue?
Fight vuol dire picchiarsi o combattere, e per estensione litigare di brutto. Argue è litigare a parole: Abbiamo litigato per il telecomando = We argued about the remote ✓. Se dici we fought, chi ti ascolta immagina le mani addosso.
