Teaching guide

Objective & content

This sheet on clothes starts from a video call between two friends: Grace is showing the new dress she is wearing to her cousin's wedding, and Amir is packing for a rainy school trip to the mountains in Wales. The call carries the target words, from sleeves, hood and pocket to smart, casual, tight and waterproof. Pupils learn to say what they wear and why ("It's too tight", "It doesn't fit"). They answer six multiple-choice questions, name six clothes from a box of eight words, match eight words with their meanings, complete nine sentences and unscramble four pattern words such as striped and checked. The sheet ends on a crossword with ten clues taken from the call.

Pedagogical guide

Pupils meet every word in the call before they practise it, then move from recognising the words to using them. Smart and casual come out of the contrast between a wedding and a walk in the rain. Every task tests words only: no answer depends on a tense. The pattern words are given as scrambled letters, with a worked example (striped), and each sentence gives a clue to the pattern. In the gap-fill and the picture task, two words in each box are extra, so pupils cannot finish by elimination. The crossword is the hardest task: there is no word box, and pupils find each word from its clue.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Ask "What are you wearing today?" and write the clothes words on the board.
  2. (10 min) Two pupils read the call aloud; the class answers the six questions.
  3. (10 min) Pupils name the six pictures and match the eight words with their meanings.
  4. (10 min) Pupils complete the sentences, then read the worked example together and unscramble the patterns.
  5. (10 min) Pupils do the crossword from the clues.
  6. (5 min) Check with the answer key on pages 4 and 5.

Adaptations

[S] A pupil describes what a classmate is wearing; the class guesses who it is.

[A] Pupils pack a bag for a weekend in the mountains or choose clothes for a party, and say why. To take it further, the class holds a fashion show, each pupil presenting a partner's clothes.

Materials & prerequisites

One copy of the three pupil pages per pupil, in colour or in black and white. Pages 4 and 5 are the answer key: keep them. Pupils should know the present simple, the present continuous, can and too + adjective, and the colours.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
