The Band!
Interactive exercises to consolidate your students’ learning.
Pupils read about Kiko's band (a singer, a guitarist, a drummer and a keyboard player), then draw the other three band members and themselves in labelled boxes and colour the hair; Kiko is drawn as the example. They answer six questions with short answers (Is Raff tall? No, he isn't. Has Juniper got glasses? Yes, she has.) and write three lines about themselves in the band. Answer key included.

Objective & content
This worksheet is about describing people by reading and drawing: He's / She's tall, short, old and He's got / She's got ... Pupils read about Kiko's band, draw Raff, Juniper, Tuan and themselves in five boxes, answer six questions with short answers and write three lines about themselves in the band.
Pedagogical guide
Task 1 is a text of four short paragraphs about Kiko (the singer: tall, long wavy dark hair, big earrings), Raff (the guitar: short, spiky red hair, freckles), Juniper (the drums: blond hair in two plaits, glasses) and Tuan, Kiko's grandad (the keyboard: old, short curly grey hair, a moustache and a beard). In task 2 five labelled boxes wait for the band and the pupil: Kiko is already drawn as the example, and pupils draw the other three and themselves, then colour the hair. In task 3 pupils read again and answer six questions with a short answer, for example Is Raff tall? No, he isn't. / Has Raff got freckles? Yes, he has. In task 4 pupils write about themselves in the band, with the starter I play the ... I'm ... I've got ... Page 2 gives the answer key and the teacher notes.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Describe a singer the class knows and let pupils guess who it is.
- (5 min) Pupils read about Kiko's band.
- (10 min) Pupils draw Raff, Juniper, Tuan and themselves in the boxes, and colour the hair.
- (5 min) Pupils read again and answer the six questions; check with the answer key.
- (5 min) Pupils write three lines about themselves in the band.
Adaptations
[S] Mime spiky hair, plaits and glasses and let pupils copy.
[A] A partner draws a sixth band member from a pupil's description.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white (the black and white version is good for colouring). Pupils need a pencil and colouring pencils. Page 2 is the answer key with teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know the words for hair and faces and have got; this sheet practises them in a reading and drawing task, so it works well after Hair, Eyes and Glasses!
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
- Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
